Cat Nyland ressurge com Heart of Pandora: entrevista exclusiva com a voz da lendária Mortal Love (English below)

Catherine Nyland, mais conhecida como Cat, nascida na Noruega, é uma cantora soprano. Fez parte da banda clássica de gothic/symphonic metal Mortal Love, e atualmente é vocalista da banda Heart of Pandora.
HL - Olá Cat, gostaria muito de agradecer por esta entrevista, é uma honra para mim.
Mortal Love é uma banda que está no coração de muitos brasileiros. Uma música muito popular (talvez até a mais popular de todas por aqui) é “I Want to Die”. Qual é a sua opinião sobre ela ser tão popular?
Cat Nyland – “I Want to Die” é uma música sombria e melódica, com uma letra um tanto obscura. O tema é o amor perdido — e o que é mais doloroso do que não ser amado de volta? Todos nós experimentamos esse sentimento uma ou mais vezes na vida, e você pode ter a sensação de que não consegue viver. Talvez seja por isso que essa música toque tão profundamente: ela reflete o que muitas pessoas sentem sobre a tristeza de amor. Talvez tenha se tornado um consolo para muitos?
Dito isso, sempre há esperança, e esses sentimentos sombrios eventualmente passam. No ano seguinte ao lançamento do álbum, recebemos muitos e-mails e comentários de pessoas que sentiram exatamente o que a música transmitia. A música com a qual você se identifica tende a te atingir profundamente. Ao mesmo tempo, essa música também era um clássico do gothic metal...
HL - O videoclipe da faixa "Adoration" também é muito marcante. Quais são suas lembranças do processo de gravação?
Cat Nyland – Já se passaram muitos anos desde que gravamos aquele vídeo, o tempo passa tão rápido... Eu lembro que todos nós acreditamos na ideia de fazer um videoclipe de gothic metal um pouco diferente. Queríamos torná-lo mais próximo da realidade e queríamos usar os jovens nos papéis. Os fotógrafos criaram o enredo em colaboração conosco da banda, e usamos uma casa em uma pequena aldeia nos arredores de Elverum (Noruega). Foi uma época incrivelmente agradável e quase moramos nesta casa. Foram longos e muitos dias de gravação. Familiares e amigos se envolveram e ajudaram, tanto na preparação antes, durante e depois da gravação. Lembro-me como um momento maravilhosamente agradável, e todo o processo de gravação foi exclusivamente divertido e educacional.
HL - O Mortal Love lançou três álbuns completos. Para você, quais são os maiores destaques de cada um?
Cat Nyland – É uma pergunta difícil de responder, já que toda a "jornada" com a banda trouxe tantas experiências boas para mim. Mas se eu tiver que escolher, a gravação de "I Have Lost" foi um destaque para mim. Também estivemos na Hungria e participamos do festival Gothica 4. Fomos para a Croácia e tocamos lá também. Era uma pequena aldeia chamada Ozijek, e quando chegamos lá, quase não havia um ser humano à vista nas ruas. Achamos que seria um show meio tranquilo, mas conforme a noite se aproximava, muitas pessoas apareceram. Diversão incrível e uma experiência maravilhosa, tanto para a banda quanto para mim. Trabalhar com os outros da banda, ir para o estúdio e sentir que a criatividade floresceu foram provavelmente os maiores destaques para mim nos três álbuns.
HL - Existe alguma possibilidade de uma reunião?
Cat Nyland – O ML se separou em 2007, e é incerto se teremos alguma reunião da banda. Já foi falado, mas ninguém sabe o que vai acontecer no futuro. Agora, as chances são pequenas.
HL - Quais foram as maiores experiências do Mortal Love que você levou para o Heart of Pandora?
Cat Nyland – Heart of Pandora é um novo projeto musical que Pål Johansen, ex-baterista do ML, iniciou em 2015. Também temos conosco Henning Ramseth, que produziu e participou da composição dos álbuns do ML. Um álbum foi lançado até agora e tivemos a sorte de gravar rapidamente o vídeo "Always in My Heart". Trouxemos um diretor e fotógrafo muito talentoso, Øyvind M. Saugerud, e isso provavelmente se destaca como um ponto alto na jornada do Heart of Pandora até agora.
HL - Eu ouvi muito “A Girl in a World of Wars” (2019) semana passada e admito que fiquei maravilhado. Heart of Pandora é uma ótima banda. O que mais você pode falar sobre ela?
Cat Nyland – Muito obrigado por suas palavras gentis, eu realmente aprecio que você goste de nossa música. Heart of Pandora consiste em três pessoas que também fizeram parte da banda ML, e é natural que muito lembre ML, já que os vocais são os mesmos. Mas queríamos criar um som um pouco diferente, mais inspirado na música pop e atmosférica — e estamos extremamente felizes com o resultado. No momento, estamos trabalhando no segundo álbum, e nosso amor por guitarras pesadas e tons mais escuros provavelmente colorirá nossa paisagem sonora de forma um pouco diferente no próximo trabalho.
HL - Cat, você está trabalhando em mais algum projeto neste momento?
Cat Nyland – Eu trabalho como professora em uma escola primária e tenho dois filhos fantásticos que também acompanho, então há muito pouco tempo para outros projetos além do Heart of Pandora. Mas constantemente faço novas músicas e espero que um dia eu possa lançar um projeto solo. O tempo dirá.
HL - Tem alguma banda do Brasil que você escute com frequência?
Cat Nyland – Infelizmente, eu não escuto nenhuma banda do Brasil atualmente, mas eu ouvia Sepultura na minha juventude.

Catherine Nyland, better known as Cat, born in Norway, is a soprano singer. She was part of the classical Gothic/Symphonic Metal band Mortal Love, and is currently the vocalist of the band Heart of Pandora.
HL - Hello Cat, I would like to thank you for this interview, it is an honor for me.
- Mortal Love is a band that is at the heart of many Brazilians, a very popular song (maybe even the most popular of all here) is "I want to die". What is your opinion about this song being so popular?
Cat Nyland: "I want to die" is a dark and melodic song, with rather gloomy lyrics. The theme is lost love and what is more painful than not being loved back? We all experience this feeling once or more in life, and you can get a feeling that you are unable to live on, and maybe that is why this song hits so well - as it reflects what many people feel about love grief. Maybe it became a consolation for many? That said, there is always hope, and these dark feelings will eventually pass. The year after we released the album, we received many emails and comments from people who felt exactly what the song conveyed, and music you identify with tends to hit deep. At the same time, that song was also a classic gothic metal song, and fortunately (for us) there are many out there who like such music.
HL - The video clip for the track "Adoration" is also very striking. What are your memories of this recording process?
Cat Nyland: It's now many years since we recorded that video, time goes by so fast... I remember we all believed in the idea of making a slightly different goth metal music video. We wanted to make it close to reality, and wanted to use young people in the roles. The photographers created the plot in collaboration with us in the band, and we used a village house in a small village just outside Elverum. It was an incredibly nice time, and we almost lived in this house. There were long days of recording and there were very many, both family and friends, who were involved and helped. I remember it as a wonderfully nice time, and the whole recording process was exclusively fun and educational.
HL - Mortal Love released 3 full-lengths. What are the biggest highlights of each one for you?
Cat Nyland: It is a difficult question to answer, as the whole journey with the band contained so many good experiences for me. But if I have to choose, the recording of "I have lost" was a highlight for me. We were also in Hungary and participated in the festival Gothica 4. We went over to Croatia and played a concert there too. It was a small village called Osijek and when we got there there was hardly a human being to be seen in the streets. We thought that this would probably be a somewhat quiet concert, but as the evening approached, a lot of people showed up. Incredible fun and a wonderful experience. Working with the others in the band, going into the studio and feeling that creativity flourished were probably the highlights for me on all three albums.
HL - Is there any possibility of a reunion?
Cat Nyland: ML split up in 2007, and it is uncertain whether we will have any reunion of the band. It has been talked about, and no one knows what will happen in the future, but as it is now, the chances are small.
HL - What were the biggest “Mortal Love” experiences you had in “Heart of Pandora”?
Cat Nyland: Heart of Pandora is a new music project that Pål Johansen, former drummer in ML, started in 2015. We also have Henning Ramseth, who also produced and participated in composing ML's albums. One album has been released so far and we were lucky to have the opportunity to record the video "Always in my heart" quite quickly. We brought with us a very talented director and photographer, Øyvind M. Saugerud, and this probably stands out as a highlight in Heart of Pandora's journey so far.
HL - I listened a lot to “A Girl in a World of Wars” (2019) last week and I admit that I was amazed. Heart of Pandora is a great band. What else can you tell us about your new band?
Cat Nyland: Thank you so much for your kind words, I really appreciate that you like our music. Heart of Pandora consists of three people who were also in ML, and it is natural that a lot may be reminiscent of ML since the vocals are the same, but we wanted to create a somewhat different sound more inspired by pop and atmospheric music — and we are incredibly happy with the result. We are currently working on album number two and our love for heavy guitars and darker tones will most likely color our soundscape somewhat differently on the next album.
HL - Cat, are you working on any more projects right now?
Cat Nyland: I work as a teacher at a primary school and have two fantastic kids that I also follow up, so there is far too little time for other projects next to Heart of Pandora. But I constantly make new songs and hope that one day I might release a solo project. Time will tell.
HL - Is there a band here in Brazil that you listen to frequently?
Cat Nyland: Unfortunately, I do not listen to any band from Brazil, but I did listen to Sepultura in my younger days.
